Mosley Street

Mosley Street in Newcastle, outside Swan’s workshop, was the first street in Britain to be lit by electric light bulbs (1880) and is said to have been the first in the world (c 1814) to be lit by gas. Swan worked at the Mawson Swan and Morgan company premises, 13 Mosley Street. Look carefully and notice the very ornate lamp posts which adorn Mosley and Collingwood Streets.

At night, particularly at weekends this area is transformed into the Diamond Strip, well known for nightclubs and bars.
